You might want to look into the model used by Apple's App Marketplace. Envato just used the method that reduced their tax burden and was the most convenient for them. How one perceives the decision is up to individual preference. It could be said that it was a wise business decision in a marketplace where they consider their market share to be dominant. Others would argue that ignoring authors will be harmful in the long term. To each his own.
It's pointless to argue about the cons and pros of the move anymore though. To those who are planning to stay with Envato, just hope the US move will bring some positive results.
